I’m new to goth and struggling to figure out why certain bands are or aren’t considered goth.

An example I suppose would be The Birthday Massacre. I've seen some people consider them darkwave and others synthpop, some call it gothic rock and others industrial.

I've just kinda been left in this confusion of how these conclusions of subgenre are made. I understand what makes Rosetta Stone gothic rock or Joy Division post-punk, but not something like TBM where I can't get a decisive answer.

Like I said, I'm new to this. Very new, and I'm just trying to figure out the sub genres I like by bands I've listened to. I tagged this as a recommendation request cuz I'd like some recommendations on the subgenres so I can see more of what they're all like to get a better understanding.

EDIT: Just want to say I appreciate all the feedback, I think I'm starting to get a better understanding of the genre!

is listening to certain music frowned upon

ive just recently got into the goth subculture and i have a friend that im pretty sure has been in it for a while and i mentioned that i was listening to taylor swift with my friends at one of their houses (their giant swifties) and she gave me a weird look

i also feel like she would judge me for listening to bands like mommy long legs and dazey and the scouts

am i supposed to stop listening to music like that

I come to ask music recommendation of a certain vibe i guess?

(I hope this doesn't go against the rules, if it does please let me know and I'll delete it right away. Or if anyone knows the right place to ask this also let me know.)

Ive been getting into goth music recently, but im not here to just vaguely ask 'beginner recs' I want to ask if any of you can reccomend me either artists or songs that, kinda are like First last and Always (especially black planet) by the Sisters, or Psychocult by The Merry thoughts. (Think low violet or the song by the same name as the album) I found those on a comment section in this subreddit and ive tried looking on my own but im not good at searching lol. Thank you everyone so very much for your valuable time!

What are your thoughts on gate keeping this scene to a certain extent?

Back when i used to go out to shows, was more involved and younger. I used to have this mentality of (punks and goths only) because of course punk and goth fall hand in hand. Never really liked metalheads, greasers, emo/scene kids, pop punkers, hardcore kids etc…. Although i did keep it cool with sharp skins, but thats because i knew them from my punk days and i mean come on Blitz is one of the best oi/ post punk bands out there, so of course we had that in common. But anyways, so you think this scene should be gatekeeped from outsiders(besides punks and goths) to a certain extent?
