Teen Gothic

I guess most goths concider goth and i do too. but sometimes i see people here and there claiming they are not goth. i don't realy get it even if they're not under this label they're still post-punk which is super close and i know not all post-punk is goth but they're definetly are. what funny is i heard someone say "just beacuse they had sad lyrics dosn't mean they are goth". so what actually make a band sound goth than ? they had sad/melancholic lyrics and also gothic/darkwave-ish instrumental.

I noticed someone made multiple posts today asking about the status of certain bands and whether they are considered goth or not – specifically The Cult and Joy Division. The post about The Cult has been open for about 8 hours, while the post on Joy Division has been locked after a little under 2 hours despite having the same rates of interaction. I don’t understand the reasoning behind locking posts that are made for the purpose of discussion. I noticed the same thing happened not too long ago when someone mentioned that The Doors were one of The Cure’s inspirations. The post was very quickly denied relevance within the sub and was locked shortly after (then deleted).

I’ve noticed lately that this group feels devoid of interesting discourse and conversations about the overlapping of genres tied to the goth movement. I’m very aware that there are other, much smaller groups like the gothclub sub where people can openly talk about music beyond the specific genre of goth, but it feels as if this group may be wringing itself dry by not allowing ANY sort of conversation beyond a “no, not goth” and locking or deleting the post. The very hard and fast rules on what may be discussed feels as if it hurts the community more than it helps. It seems as if people have been interacting with posts in general less and less over time because of these regulations.

I understand it may be tiring to hear the same “is this goth” question asked time and time again, but for a group focused entirely on musical interest – I don’t see the harm in it! I joined this group because I was interested in the development and growth of the genre, which includes a vast range of inspirations and genres spanning several decades. It does not serve our community to not acknowledge them.

I've been browsing online and stumbled upon a disturbing comment where a guy is referring to a goth girl as a "goth dommy mommy". It really bothered me, even though I'm not part of the goth community myself. There's just something about the way he said it that made me feel uneasy. It's like, why do guys feel the need to objectify women in this way? And what's with the constant refrain of "I want a goth dommy mommy"? Can't they just leave these poor goth women alone?

And when they post pictures of the kind of woman they're looking for, it's always some generic E-girl or super attractive woman with long black hair and red lipstick. It's like, hello, those aren't even real goths! It's just another example of how men reduce complex and multifaceted people to shallow physical characteristics.

I came across another guy who was sharing his 'expert' advice on how to get a goth girl as a girlfriend. His so-called 'tips' were basically just stereotypical nonsense. He said something like, "Hey guys, if you want to impress a goth girl, send them pictures of your skateboard. Trust me, they love skater boys!" Uhm…where did he get this from? Does he actually know any goth girls? It's like he's trying to reduce an entire subculture to some generic, one-size-fits-all profile.

And honestly, who are we to assume what goth girls are into? Newsflash: they're not all the same! Maybe some of them do like skateboards, but that doesn't mean all of them do. And even if they did, would they want some dude hitting on them because of their makeup and only that? Probably not.

What's wrong with just being genuine and respectful? If you're interested in someone, approach them like a normal human being and have a real conversation. Don't try to fit them into some predetermined box or stereotype. Compliment them on something meaningful, like their music taste or art style. It's not that hard. That's all I have to say for now.

From what i have heard their first two albums are goth and the rest are more hard rock.
