What are the subgenres within goth?

I'll see music posted with tags like goth rock, post-wave, etc. What's the difference?

How did Spellbound become the informal “goth anthem”?

To be clear, I'm not dissing the song — it's stellar and probably one of the first goth songs any baby bat hears for good reason

But how did it come to have this ubiquitous status? Is there something particularly unique about this song, as compared to anything else by the big 4?
