Teen Gothic

I’ve seen a lot of fashion brands add bdsm elements to anything they have that is gothic “gothic dress with harness straps etc..”

Also I’ve seen a lot of people that always associate goth girls with bdsm “like when they see them they immediately assume they’re into bdsm etc..”

These are just few examples of what I’m trying to say

So… now to the real question

What is the history and link/association between goth culture and bdsm? Is bdsm inherently part of the culture? If bdsm is not, then how did all of this associations between the two start?

I've noticed the Goth scene here in the states has for decades gradually and now almost totally been consumed by the much harder BDSM scene. In the 90's and before the goth scene was far less overtly kinky. It was almost entirely music oriented, and all styles of goth music lovers were accepted in the scene although the dark victorian thing was the norm. Slowly it evolved into way more piercings, liquid latex, far more extreme vanity, and way less focus on the music. I can go to a "goth" club now and barely hear any old school goth club standards that I recognize. It's like the raver's and kink scenes flooded in and it became more about a very extreme narrow fashion show then about the music. It's quite a drag as the music was what made it great, and from what I can tell, it's been almost entirely abandoned except a token classic thrown in to disguise that it's basically a dark fetish techno rave.
