Why is subcultural confusion primarily unidirectional?

So I see a lot of things that are not goth being called goth (emo, metal, general non-denominational alternative, etc) and not a lot of goth things being called emo, metal, etc.

As far as I can tell, no one calls Bauhaus a metal or emo band. No one calls them industrial. It seems to me, things get mistaken for goth but not vice versa. In terms of sheer numbers I'm pretty sure there are more metalheads than goths, and I'm pretty sure most people know what metal is (though the subgenres cause many outsiders confusion). Emo is a younger subculture, and so I think has less name recognition, but yeah.

This is a completely idle question with no practical importance, but it's weird, right? So do we have any clue why that is?

Confusion with the first wave bands

Hi, I've been researching the subculture for a while now and one thing that I'm constantly getting confused about and that cause me a headaches is drawing a line when it comes to early goth bands. If we exclude the American deathrock scene, I know there's positive punk and post punk goth bands but also there are bands that are apparently just darker sounding post punk bands which people don't consider as goth and there's exactly where I'm having troubles with. Below I listed bands that I find confusing so if you guys can help me tell me which of those is goth and which isn't I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Sad Lovers and Giants
The Snake Corps
The Chameleons
Pink Turns Blue
And Also The Trees
The Bolshoi
Flesh For Lulu
The Sound
New Model Army
Killing Joke
Lords Of The New Church
The Damned
Virgin Prunes
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry
Tones On Tail
Love And Rockets
The Glove
The Creatures
Dalis Car
Gene Loves Jezebel
Balaam And The Angel
Ghost Dance

Evanescence confusion with Goth

I hope I dont get banned for asking this, I am just really confused. Mods, please take this down if I am breaking the rules (I read them over and over and still don't quite get it, but am getting better at it)

I saw on Wikipedia that Goth rock bands include Siousxie and the Banshees and Evanescence. Is this true? I also saw Rasputina there.

But when I check on our Reddit band list, I only see Siousxie and not Evanescence or Rasputina.

So are they even Goth at all? I do not understand.

(btw I have been listening to the Goth playlists here and I am loving it.)

thank you.

Confusion about all the different genres!

I don’t have a clear understanding of what exactly Industrial is and would really appreciate if it could be explained with some examples of industrial artists!

I also see post-punk be confused with goth. I somewhat have an understanding of the two but not sure where to draw a clear line.

Then there’s coldwave, darkwave (heavy synth?), ethereal wave, and all that fun stuff lol. I’m not too sure of the difference between all of those.

Examples are appreciated! Hoorah to learning!
