Why is this subculture called goth

So basically I am a history buff and also a goth and I was wondering why is this subculture and genre of music called "goth". Cause historically it referred to an actual race of people instead of a music-based subculture. I looked arpund the sub reddit and didn't really find a straight answer. So my question basically is why are the genre and subculture called "goth" and what are its origins Edit: I know this is a dumb question but it has been bugging me for a while

What is going on with the “Is this goth? Is this goth?” discourse that has absolutely flooded the sub lately?

It seems like Goth has become this cryptic over-mythologised monolith of a thing which none of us can emulate. All these users scrambling here with their lists and their questions about subgenres and fear of being seen as poseurs…

We need to ban these posts and ask the mods to make a pinned post saying "your goth is valid" or some crap because it's pitiful seeing people worry about whether they can consider themselves goth. Bro, if you're here, you're goth! Do what you like. But most of all, DON'T limit yourself.

It's concerning to see the term distorted by the internet (mainly tiktok) into something that makes me even question how well I belong here. Can we nip this in the bud and return to our batcaves, please?

Longtime lurker. Worried about the subculture becoming bigger than itself and putting off daunted newcomers!

Anyway, stream Five Ten Fiftyfold.

What questions are you sick of being asked on this sub?

Why does this sub have a reputation for not being accepting?

I’ve read a lot of experiences over the past couple of years and have come across this issue many times. This place I guess has a reputation for gatekeeping (most notably by the mods).

An example of many is this: https://www.reddit.com/r/industrialmusic/s/3zckgFbgrB

I know it can be a frustrating thing to not feel accepted which is what the goth community in general has experienced in society itself. Do you think it’s justified to believe that this “gatekeeping” goes on here?

Do you agree this dream pop/shoegaze band sounds really goth?

I recently stumbled upon this band called Life On Venus which is labelled as Dream Pop and Shoegaze. While we know that some dream pop and shoegaze can sound similar to goth, this particular band sounds a little bit too goth for dream pop standards. It literally sounds more goth than a lot of bands labelled as darkwave and ethereal wave that are posted here. I would say it's on the same level as Drab Majesty and probably more goth than mid-era Cocteau Twins which is generally accepted here without questions. Here are a few songs, what do you think?

  • Camera Obscura (this one has noisy shoegaze parts, but otherwise it sounds very goth-like)
  • For the Kill (this one is on the same level as Drab Majesty and almost approaches Twin Tribes)
  • What Lies Beneath (this also has a noisy shoegaze section but is otherwise very similar to Drab Majesty and Twin Tribes, even the vocals are a little bit similar to Drab Majesty and would not be out of place on a goth album)
  • Summer (this one has a little bit more prominent bass which would not be out of place on a goth album)

If you don't think it's goth, then what makes it different from goth music in your opinion and where is the exact border between dream pop/post-punk and goth? So far the only things I can note are the noisy sections that are pretty different from what can be generally found in goth music, the vocals are a little bit different. Otherwise it easily passes as ethereal wave IMO.
