Teen Gothic

I see this complaint all over social media that goth has become mainstream, that everyone is goth now, that there’s so many goth young people etc… and it always inevitably leads to people trying to compare individuals as to who’s “more goth” based purely on appearances. But I just don’t think that’s happening at all. Maybe alternative fashion and music is on the rise, but I just don’t see that many truly goth/alternative people when I’m going about my day to day life.

That being said, I do think post punk music has been “mainstream” for a long time. Just look at the streaming statistics for popular 80’s post punk bands. But if you look for people that live and eat and breathe the goth lifestyle and who listen mostly to post punk/goth music, I still don’t think it’s that popular. It’s just all over social media because if you’re goth, you’re likely interacting with goth content.

But how did it come to have this ubiquitous status? Is there something particularly unique about this song, as compared to anything else by the big 4?

I was thinking it kinda seems weird for goth to not be something you started with as a teen. Curious as to how common it is.

I don't know about your country, but I feel that here in Finland, the entry fees have become excessive. A gig featuring two bands that are just starting their careers can have a 15 euro entry fee, plus a cloakroom fee. I believe it's a lose-lose situation for everyone because it will result in significantly fewer attendees compared to if the entry fee were, for example, 5 euros. Many potential audience members may choose to stay home, causing these new bands to have even fewer people watching their gig than they would normally have. Do you have any thoughts on this, and is it similar in your country?

Hi. I would like to know what made you guys become goth. Was it the way how gothic people dress or was it the music or both or some other factor?

Just of of curiosity! Was it the music, fashion or other lifestyle aspects that drew you in? Or anything?

This might be a silly question but I was just wondering if I can study law and at the same time keep my goth lifestyle going on without worrying about my reputation or if it’s gonna effect my working life/career in any other ways.

I’d love to hear your opinion because it matters for me a lot, been struggling lately to make a decision…
