How did goth develop from very guitar driven sounds to a modern shape with a heavy emphasis on synth, while still being considered goth?

There's a gulf between Sisters of Mercy and something like Twin Tribes or Forever Grey, but we all intuit them as 'goth' and i'm just wondering how this developed, historically.

EDIT: Misspoke here, did not mean to imply that synth or darkwave is a modern thing, but more that it's far more prevalent now as a dominant goth sound and was curios as to how we still consider this music to be goth (not that i disagree with that at all).

How does this subreddit regard Minimal Wave/Minimal Synth?

I certainly don't see it in genres 101 so it's safe to say the genre as A whole isn't regarded as A "goth genre". What about bands or albums that crossover into Post-Punk, or darkwave? Like I think Das Kabinette is A good example of A minimal wave band that can pass into DarkWave. Or what about Lebanon Hanover's minimal synth songs such as Totally Alive, would those songs be allowed? Or perhaps people don't even recognize Minimal Wave as A legit genre and just split albums into lofi variants of Synthpop, postpunk, or DarkWave ( like how "Dark Disco" is just DarkWave, EBM, and Industrial songs)

What’s the name for super synth heavy goth music?

I’m trying to find more goth music that’s like this really synth heavy stuff… I think it’s called “ethereal wave” but I’m really not sure. I stumbled upon dark wave researching gothic metal and more industrial music. This synth goth stuff is cool but when I look up “dark wave” it’s like anything that’s gothic or dark post-punk in general. Is ethereal wave correct for the more atmospheric synth stuff? Sometimes that gets tagged on shoegaze/dream pop stuff so I’m not sure if that’s right either. Also if it helps I’m looking for mostly electronic artists, not a goth rock band that uses some synthesizers, if there’s much of that. Or any playlists on Spotify/apple
