Teen Gothic

I've been interested in the goth subculture for a while, a few days ago, I decided to listen to the music and, omg, I've feel in love with it, I've easliy spend several hours just listening to goth music, it's one of my favorite genres now and I'm even planning on watching some goth movies. I'm also planning on dressing in goth style, but here's the problem, I'm mostly an indoors person, so I've very few friends and the only people I talk with frequency is my family. I decided to reveal my interests and my plan for my goth outfit today, expecting support and unfortunaley, as you've guessed, all I was meet with is mockery, harsh judgement and them claiming them won't help me with anything, they even said that I'll look "horrifiying" or a "freak" or even saying stuff like "imagine you going out like this in public, looking like a vampire, if you want it, fine, but let's agree that's weird and I don't want any part of that", this has made me very sad and also very lonely, it's makes me think that I'll never meet someone that respects or have the same interests as me and that people are only going to see me as a "weirdo" (not helping that I've only meet like, 2 alt ppl besides me in my entire life), I can't put in words how this has broken my heart. I'm planning on revealing my goth interests to my very few friends, I hope they understand me and don't judge or mock me. I have an immense appreciation for the Victoria era and have been wanting to dress basically like a Victorian vampire for some time now, on the slightly more historically-accurate side. I've seen a few decent items on websites like Shrine of Hollywood and Dracula Clothing, namely their waistcoats, shirts, and a couple tailcoats, however when it comes to measurements, I don't even make it to their smallest sizes. I'm 5'0, of average weight, and wear size five shoes. I truly am in quite the predicament. Do I have any other options? If I must I am willing to take up sewing, though I'm not sure I'll be especially proficient, and I can imagine it might take me a long while to become adept enough to make the pieces I truly desire. I'd be willing to wear women's sizes as well, however I doubt there are many particularly masculine options. I'm not particularly put off by higher prices either, as a fellow artist I acknowledge that good craftsmanship is expensive.

There's a gulf between Sisters of Mercy and something like Twin Tribes or Forever Grey, but we all intuit them as 'goth' and i'm just wondering how this developed, historically.

EDIT: Misspoke here, did not mean to imply that synth or darkwave is a modern thing, but more that it's far more prevalent now as a dominant goth sound and was curios as to how we still consider this music to be goth (not that i disagree with that at all).

Only just started to lean into goth music with Joy Division and The Cure cause I wanted to get to know the inspirations and fundaments first, but I’m really enjoying it so far, and absolutely love the lyrics on Unknown Pleasures which I know isn’t really Goth but thought it was still worth mentioning.

Most the music I listen to are Folk music like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Ani DiFranco and Jewel, all artists known as amazing songwriters, Cohen and Drake especially with some of their very dark lyrics. They all tap into really specific feelings, ideas and experiences in very powerful ways, and I want to see if I can find that in this genre. Any suggestions?

Hi! I work at a Chinese food restaurant that’s pretty relaxed with rules as for music we can play. Currently, me and my friend made a mostly Chinese citypop playlist, but I thought it would be super cool if I asked about any chinese artists anyone would recommend ^{_^} my only requirement for the music being played is that it’s in a Chinese language, and I’d love to see recommendations for goth around the world anyway. Please let me know about anything cool!!

can you identify? i'm in long island but an hour from the big city and don't really want to get home at 3am. we've had some good nights going here over the years but it's few and far between. as a DJ, i had given up on ever trying to start a new night though some opportunities recently came up and it's been the same frustration.

the problems i always encounter is that people are not on the same page, whether it's the owner of the venue, the management or other DJs. even though we all want a "goth" / dark dance music night, they have other ideas of what that should look and sound like. and forget about approaching a venue that knows nothing about the music and culture.

i feel like it's such a simple concept and yet people either don't care enough or make it overly complicated.
