An unknown jewel: Temple of Rain

In 1998 in New York a band called Temple of Rain had an ephemeral existence. So quick and even at the time so obscure they were that today hardly anyone even knows they existed. On the whole searchable Internet there are fewer mentions of them than I have fingers on one hand. On this forum the name of the band appeared 5 years ago in a post with 2 songs and no replies – though they richly deserve reactions. In any case, I don't pretend to be a music historian, and don't care to be. They might have gone on to become a band called Maya Hyena – their lead, one called Siryn, was there, and maybe Zoltan Bathory, who played very impressive guitar riffs in Temple, but from what little of that later music I listened to, they never really got it up to the same level. As Temple of Rain they wrote maybe 8 songs all together, on 2 small CDs, with some overlap between them. The CDs are rare, even if you know they exist, and naturally there is nothing of theirs for streaming.

All this is a dull mandatory introduction. What matters is the music, which is superb. Not only is it beautiful, but the lyrics are deep, sad, thrilling, terrifying, stormy. In 1998, when I came across one of the CDs, I thought the songs were just way cool, but today, as I listen to the words, I find them hard to take. This may even make goth music impossible for me, because when the themes of loneliness, despair, truth and death are a genre pose, they bore me, and when they are not, they pierce me with icy realizations. That is the problem with true art.

This is my first post here, and I can only hope I don't violate any rules by posting a download link to the album "Wicked." On it there are 4 songs and a live performance. The other album is called "Dark Night of the Soul" and has a couple of different songs. Though this is such a small number, each shines like a silver dollar and is perfectly worth chasing after. I can ask the owner of the CDs to upload the second disc, if there is enough interest here. And for preview YouTube does host one ToR song – the namesake "Wicked," in fact. It is an okay intro to the melodics and Siryn's voice, but, in my opinion, a weak ToR piece. If this one makes you nod and say "That's nice," the songs on the album are going to make you forget yourself.
