Nick Cave is not goth?

I love Nick Cave, have for years, but I just don’t see how he or his band(s) are goth. Is there just an album that I’ve been missing this whole time?

Also, why is he so often lumped into goth when other musicians of an equally different or weird sound aren’t? Is he just grandfathered in from the time when genres didn’t matter as much or from his past associations ? That’s the only thing I can think of.

Full disclosure, I don’t follow the genre arguments very closely anymore. I used to when I was younger but I got to a point where I realized how futile it is, especially in the face of music evolution and experimentation. I know some people take it much more seriously and I don’t mean to offend.

I was listening to Nick Cave a few minutes ago and just wanted to post this question to try to learn a bit more. Maybe my curiosity got the better of me. Any help would be appreciated.
