How do start things/start as a DJ in a dying scene

Hey fellow bats,

Just wanted to see what are the experiences (and advice) from both new-ish goths and elder goths in your scene. Specifically where the scene is dying out/experiencing an identity crisis.

As much as I love my local goth scene, we are facing inconsistent events and the music that is being played is also being inconsistent. Not to mentioned there's also drama behind the scenes that have made things hard to have a consistent audience. We have also lost beloved venues left and right, which means the only consistent events that many babybats have are corporate emo events and some metal events. (I won't go too detailed on the issues we have, to not start any fire)

So the question is: how will you even start to save the scene if you are in this situation? I don't know anything about event management and kind of want to be a DJ to be able to spin stuff that people wants to hear. I'm curious about your thoughts and advice. Thank you.

I met Sung from Past Self

He was really nice about taking the photo (& overall super chill). They had a strong closing set and even if you don’t speak Korean (as some lyrics are), I think the music transcends language.

They also had one of the most interesting merch I’ve seen & picked up. In Korean shamanism, a bujeok (talisman) is handwritten by a mudang (like their song, it means shaman). These were handmade by Sung's family member. Depending on the design, it has a different purpose and this one is for 소원성취 (wish fulfillment).

I unfortunately didn’t get to catch the full Ball lineup but highlights for me were DECEITS, Rosegarden Funeral Party (Leah was the sweetest when we met her at merch & my friend loved she signed their lighter), and Anja Huwe/Xmal Deutschland!! They haven't played in the US in ~40yrs, so that was really special to see.

Both Past Self and Rosegarden Funeral Party have US tours coming up, definitely recommend catching them if they pass through your city.

Los Darks and their inhumane treatment of audience members.

Hey everyone so me and my friend attended the Los Darks festival yesterday, we were iffy about it from the start but couldn’t get rid of tix so we gave it a chance.

The bands and sound system were great. The issue came with the organization itself and their communication. My friend and I bought GA tickets and were expecting to be on the floor like any other festival. When we got there at 2:00pm for London After Midnight, we were NOT asked for any wristbands and made it to the floor. The sun and the aluminum floor made the heat too unbearable, so we walked to the back of the bleachers to get some shade before The Adicts started, since there were no heat accommodations on the floor area, which is CRAZY for a GOTH festival where majority of people are wearing black. When we wanted to get back in suddenly there were security posted in every entrance to the floor demanding wristbands. Once we asked them where to get them, they pointed to the front, where we came in originally, so we went and found out they “ran out”, forcing us to sit on those bleachers for the rest of the festival. As the show went on we could feel the anger building up from the crowd, bursting in many people jumping from the bleachers into the floor, as they should. Me and my friend walked around the venue trying to get a straight answer as to the why of that ridiculous policy, we went to 5 different security posts and no one could explain the why or if/when they would get more wristbands. No staff member could give us a straight answer, only that we should’ve come before the festival started and wait in line to get floor wristbands. It was insanely frustrating to see the floor not at full capacity topped with the fact that VIP was also not at capacity and left a massive gap that could’ve been filled by people who payed to be on the floor. It almost ruined our experience, if not for the amazing bands and sound engineers.

Fuck this festival, fuck its organizers and I hope as a community, we let it rot and die. LISTEN TO YOUR GUT PEOPLE!! I know I should’ve. And stick to your local scene, not sellouts.

Are there any more goth songs that sound like Riboflavin by 45 Grave?

Asides from recommendations, what (sub?)genre of goth music would this be assigned to ? 😖

Los Darks was rough

The VIP-only standing area was huge and mostly empty so the rest of us regular people had to stand behind a separate barricade 40 feet back. It also contained the only shaded area in the whole venue, again, VIP-only. They also ran out of floor wristbands even though the standing area was maybe 15% filled so they started sending people to fill the bleachers and didn’t allow them to come down. The DJs were great up until the break between Johnny Marr and Caifanes when they played country and pop music like wtf. The bands were all good but I feel like I got scammed paying this much for this experience.

Los Darks disappoinment

What a joke, got here at 5 and ran out of wristbands?? My mom wanted to be on the floor for Caifanes, what a disappointment

The “sold out” Los darks festival.

Couldn’t get a refund so my friends and I decided to go. They aren’t letting any more people in despite it being pretty fucking empty. The bleacher on the right side isn’t even halfway full lmfao
