Goth club in NYC 90s early 2000s
Not sure if this is the correct place to ask but I used to go to a goth club in NYC back in the day and I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called. It was in Alphabet City. Had a main room and a small back room. Used to go there a lot and I can’t remember what it was called. Ugh. Was talking ti a friend who would go with me and he can’t remember either. I’m sure it’s not there anymore. Any ideas?

What was it like be goth in the early 2000’s?
Im very curious what it was like to be goth in the early 2000’s were you bullied/ made fun of more then now? Have you noticed a change in how people treat you then vs now? I’m genuinely curious what it was like in that era. If anyone was goth in that era or before let me know your experience!

As a 2000s goth, I have no memory of goths and emos not getting along. I remember metalheads and emos not getting along. *ramble*
Oh the drama was real. Especially in the southwest states and Latin America.
I remember the emo kids getting their asses kicked by the metalheads on the daily, especially at concerts, where there was an emo/screamo band and metal band playing.
I recently watched that episode of South Park where the goth kids are frustrated at being mistaken for emos..
Like we were arch enemies or something.
I think they got it wrong there. I always thought emos and goths kinda lived in the same social bubble.
The emos ensured a huge backlash though that I don’t ever remember going through in the goth scene.
In Latin America, emos were literally being murdered in the streets. And in most of the southern, southwest states in the US, emos were scene as pussies and… damn it was like what’s going on these days with the trans backlash almost. Not nearly as publicized though.
Ramble over.

Being goth in the Early 2000s wasn’t easy
I noticed nostalgia is moving toward the early 2000s lately, and while it's good to explore and discuss a lot of really good goth music and positive aspects of the subculture and scene memories from this time, on the other hand, I have to say if you into the music and subculture then while it was happening, it wasn't always an easy time for everyone for the following reasons especially when compared to a certain periods in 90s and 2010s-present.
-Loads of increasing misinformation from every corner; tv shows, questionable books, and overwhelming amount of poor or mediocre internet articles. For some reason it seemed more than other periods.
-There was much more of a limit on what you could find online, in terms of music and band info and music via filesharing and video content.
-Very conservative time and lots of homophobic and vulgar language was extremely normalized and could be frequently used towards anyone that was goth.
-Lots of people conflated industrial bands with goth. Too many people appropriating goth at the same time (cybergoth, mall goths etc)
-Right after Columbine and few years after, dressing goth, depending where you lived, increased your chance of getting physically assaulted compared to other periods, labeled as a potential shooter, sent to a school therapist, totally harassed non-stop etc
-Also less easy to find DIY guides compared to today and other periods.
What do you remember?
There are tons of positive things about this period. The point here is just to have honest discussion about how things were for some people into goth.
