Why are people so concerned about whether or not they’re allowed to be considered goth?

I follow several music/subculture reddits and almost none of them have people asking if they truly fit the title or not, absolutely none have near as many people asking this as I constantly see here in r/goth.

As far as I've always been concerned, the only opinion that should matter is your own when it comes to self image and applying labels is futile, you're allowed to enjoy something without being boxed in by the eyes of others. That's kind of a major point of punk/goth/metal's foundation as far as I understand it.

I'm not trying to disparage, but I am genuinely curious why this seems so consistant here. Any speculation as to why this particular subreddit seems so desperate for the approval of others and some silly sense of permission to consider themselves a part of the culture?

How to meet goth people as a minor.

I’m a minor, and I consider myself a goth. I listen to a lot of 80s gothic and some modern stuff too. Since I’m under 18, I can’t go to a lot of goth events like bars and clubs. i’m quite shy but I would like to meet more goth friends. I live in Philadelphia. thanks! 🙂

People with IRL goth friends. Where did you meet them?

For me, I don't have goth friends, but I have met some lovely people involved in the subculture 🙂 For example, I was at the record store buying a Sisters of Mercy, The Cult and The Cure albums (along with some metal albums) and a father with a Sisters of Mercy band shirt and his daughter complimented me on my choice of album. Which was Floodland, but First and Last and Always is my favourite.

Years ago, I tried making a friend on Amino and I met a German girl who was very into goth rock and darkwave, but industrial too. She was very cheerful and kind, but I didn't access my account any more for some reason. I still think about her to this day and wish I could've kept her username or something.

I knew a girl at high school who listened to goth rock and post-punk and knew quite a bit about the subculture, but you would never have guessed that by the way she portrayed and dressed herself! I had a blast talking about the subculture, history and music with her. We have both expressed that we want to spend more time with each other and that we want to be good friends. However, we are both expecting each other to make the first move, like two Hollywood cowboys waiting to draw at a gunfight.

Where did you meet other goths IRL?

Any ideas how to convince people to join a goth tribute band?

Hi, i'm from Mexicali. I've been trying to make a bauhaus tribute in my city (Because I can't find any place to listen to goth music).

The bandmates of my band (I won't mention the name of it) are from other parts of the world, so it's almost impossible to make them travel + it is very expensive. Here where I live, most of people I know doesn't know about bauhaus or isn't interested (They prefer The Cure, Soda Stereo, Los prisioneros, etc.)

Any tips for what I can do? I'm new in the music area, i've been singing all my life but never organized something big from the start (besides the band, but that's something different).

(Those eyes were painted by me)

are turkish people welcome to goth/techno clubs?

sorry for the weird question, but I have been thinking about going to a club like this for a while now. There are some really nice music that I'd like to enjoy at a venue like this and dance to it.

Living in germany, never really went to a club here at least not goth/techno styled one and was wondering if I would be welcome? Out of curiosity I looked at pictures of clubs and didnt see anyone looking turkish or of eastern origin

is the goth scene in your area mainly populated by older people too?

This is what I observed from a year of going to goth clubs in the capital of germany. The age average is 40 mainly. I am in my 20s and I rarely see young people. I guess it makes sense bc people in their 40s and over were teenagers when the goth subculture was at its peak. These days not so much. Or maybe the young goths dont go to clubs and participate in the online scene instead?
