When can I start calling myself goth?

I started listening to goth rock a few weeks ago when a friend I made at college played it for me. So far I really like a lot of the music I’ve checked out.

I’ve also begun looking into the history of the goth subculture, how it originated, the clubs, lifestyle, etc. Although I’m definitely going to do some more in depth research in the future.

I’m still developing my style, I wouldn’t say it’s a goth style per se but it’s definitely a darker aesthetic.

Here’s the music I’ve listened to so far: Alien Sex Fiend Fields of the Nephilim Clan of Xymox Skinny Puppy Sisters of Mercy Sopor Aeternus Depeche Mode (not sure if Depeche Mode counts)

So is it too early to call myself goth?

What’s a song you enjoy listening to lately? Mine’s Poison Door from Sisters of Mercy, it fits the snow and winter atmosphere here pretty well🦇

What do you say to haters?

In Australia there’s a group of brand wearing dickheads called eshays who particularly hate gays and goths or anyone who remotely looks goth. They are usually in their mid teens and always wear the same nike, adidas or other shitty brands as a signature of being eshay. It’s constant harassment from different eshays everywhere. It doesn’t matter whether you’re alone or in a group they’ll bark at you like you’re a dog, scream “emo!! Ahhhh!” And call you many slurs.

I’ve always been frustrated because I never quite know the perfect come back to shout at these pricks.

Any ideas?
