Teen Gothic

In recent years, I can't help but notice how samey people tend to look in regards to clothes, hair and makeup style. When you look back at goths over the years you can get a sense of that person based on their style because it feels uniquely them, like they took the time to craft that look. Things change a lot when you get to the mid-late 2010s.

With the rise of social media and influencer culture, brands can just pay people to shill out for their clothes and make it seem desirable; all the while their clothes is made with the cheapest labor possible and with only money at the forefront of their minds. Thus creating a perceived high price of entry for baby bats getting into the scene.

I don't blame the people, but I do think brands have been wielding the net and social media like a weapon against our individuality.

This week had some solid finds at my local thrift stores!

Got a very simple black dress that I'm super excited to experiment with, it'll be a nice piece to layer with corsets, belts, blazers, and big jewelry. It's a tad bit long but I don't mind to much, as I'll be wearing heels with it.

A nice, knee length striped skirt. Been looking for more skirts to work with so I'm happy to have found this piece!

A beautiful textured blazer that fits me perfectly, I'm super excited to play with this one. It'll be a great focus piece.

A deep maroon/ redish purple blazer that is less structured than the previous one and will be a great more casual piece as it's a bit oversized on me.

A simple velvet tank top, has great texture and will be a great simple base piece.

A black denim jacket that I think would be perfect for some DIY, still brainstorming ideas for it, might put some patches on the pockets and maybe stud the cuffs and collar? Open to suggestions 🙂

A slightly sheer short sleeved button down that will be great for once the weather heats up again, both for layering and just for wearing over a bralet or bodysuit.

A very nice, very soft scarlet cardigan that will be a great more casual-goth look for cooler weather.

Then finally, a pair of platform heels with a very wide circular heel. Once I break them in to my feet, these will make great dancing heels.

All in all, I'm super satisfied with my haul! This week was the first time I went thifting at some of my bigger local places and I was pretty impressed with what I could find. Maybe next Friday I'll do some styling for the pieces I got!

There is an idea that is on my mind for some time, I decided to post on it. The fact that going beyond what is considered typical to a gender in the sense of fashion was not exactly how the mainstream so it in Goth fashion is a known fact. In a way, of course, this is something that comes from the gender bending 1980ies fashion. It meant romanticism, but also rebellion.

Today, for a male Goth to wear makeup is pretty normal, in the boundaries of the subculture, even more feminine things, like high heeled shoes. And all this while that male Goth not being gay or transgender at all. Yet, in this thing, certain lines are not crossed, like a male Goth wearing a dress or like dressing 100% female. I head of male Goths doing just that, dressing in a way that the mainstream would consider full crosdressing, without being gay or trans.

My question for all of you is regarding this. Are there any male Goths who embrace things like this, considered crosdressing in the mainstream, without being gay or trans or without being relevant for you, but a manifestation of your inner Gothsness? Like,, dressing like a Vampire Queen, while being a straight, cisgender guy. I am very curious of your answers.

I am not intending on starting a flame war in the comments, I am only curious as to individual feelings.

So, i got in a discussion on another goth related forum of "dress codes" at venues. My attitude is "fuck you, i wear what i want, when i want". I'm more into "post punk" in general than strictly goth, and my manner of dress is typically more on the punk side of things or whatever weirdness i'm on at that moment (currently,: tie dye clerical/preist clothing. Im going for psychedelic ufo cult leader)
The issue is some people are pushing harder for dress codes at events and venues. I take serious issue with that. Why should i be obligated to wear certain colors or conform toa certain style of dress, when i only care about the music? I tend to have the urge to do the opposite of what im told, so if im being told i need to wear black, im going to rebell against it beacuse its just my nature. I thought my attitude of "fuck the fashion, its all about the music" would be the more popular, but apprently im in the minority. alot of people responded in favor of it. To me, that just seems hypocritical since this is an alternative subculture that arose put of punk. what does the reddit goth folk think. should one be olbigated to wear black at goth night? what if i WANT to stand out like a sore thumb?

Because they call themselves goth and alternative but the only thing alt about them is their wardrobe. Many of these people cant even name a band or artist. And here I am who doesnt dress the part, plus being a guy they almost dont believe me when I say I like mostly goth & darkwave music. Oh well..
