Is gothic literature a part of the subculture still?

So this is something I’ve been perplexed about for awhile, so Ik the subculture was founded on music and that, but I feel like there’s not much emphasis on gothic literature all that much, at least not anymore.

My uncle said literature was just as important as the music in the 90’s, but it feels like we’ve all kind of forgotten about it these days. I mean, I got into the subculture from gothic literature, and it’s been around for WAY longer than the music, so why don’t we ever talk about it?

Surely being goth has SOMETHING to do do with influence of gothic horror stories? Listening to the music is fine, but it’s literally the bare minimum of how to be goth, and of this rich subculture full of mixes and mingling of so many different influences (seeing as how the music is so widespread in genres) and doesn’t the literature capture that too?

Would you consider someone who listens to goth music, but doesn’t dress the part, goth?

I've been thinking about this for a while, as "listening to the music" always seems to be the criteria when people ask if someone is goth. A lot of people who dress quite goth get called posers or something like it because they don't listen to any goth bands, but don't the clothes have at least some say in the matter?

Portraits of Luis Vasquez of the Soft Moon, part 2. And piano cover of Total Decay / Far

Drawings from my collection, portraying Luis in 2016. And I want to share something I recorded as a gift for him in February 2016 and then he started to remember me 💔

https://m.soundcloud.com/pelamiten/total-decay-far-piano-cover-improvisation-the-soft-moon-luis-vasquez-pela-miten

After I gave him the CD with the track, I was so ashamed of myself, feeling like a complete freak. CD also had 2 Killing Joke covers, my own improvised composition and a video with me confessing gratitude he exists (his lyrics helped me a lot with my existential anxiety, but I didn't know how to say it so probably I was so so awkward lol). I came back to the tracks after the heartbreaking news.

My dream was to become a musician like him, but I didn't manage to even start due to depression.

My intention for this first upload on my fresh soundcloud account is to see, how many years it will take for me, to have my own first gig with my own produced music, and obviously entangling covers of his music into my performance, too. I owe him, so so so much. Damn, crying writing now.

Luis Vasquez’s powerful figure, the Soft Moon parallels my own art. Part 1.

Luis Vasquez, forever.

Dear fans of the Soft Moon, I decided to share something with you. This is one of my portraits of him that I drew in 2016. There is a lot more of it, but I need to take small steps, because editing photos of all my artworks is a bit too overwhelming.

I have my own unique perspective on his music and it might add a different angle to the portrait. Perhaps, it will make it even more interesting, if I share it with you. I genuinely love to speak about how his music is making me to feel, but I’ll try to keep it cool.

There is a song that first came to my mind today, which Luis created in collaboration with John Foxx, it's called "Evidence". I remember that what impressed me most about this track was that at that time (before the Criminal album), in my opinion, most of his music had a constant, running rhythm, and for me in „Evidence” it seemed to stop and amazing things started to come out. I also can't deny that I find this arrangement so exquisite, sexy, sneaking and lurking, clearly done differently than his albums of the time (that are also great). I remember that back then I was dreaming that Luis would start modifying his characteristic trance rhythm and introduce more space there, similarly like in brilliant Deeper album, but even more. And this 'even more' happened in the subsequent albums Criminal, A Body Of Errors and Exister, and in particular, in "Sad Song". The amount of space in this piece is almost overwhelming me, which adds even more expressiveness and the impression of freeing myself from the mentioned in the lyrics "sulfur" grip.

I miss waiting so much for the next albums, the next songs, the next ideas and seeing them in the context of his development. I watched him with fascination because his sound was able to bring out things in me that no one else, no therapist, could open and work through with me. His honest lyrics struck at the heart of my existential terror and tamed it, showing that he fucking understood it too. With his passing, I feel that now my new chapter begins. I regret so much that we won't meet again after your gig. I will always respect you, Luis.

Please, enjoy the drawing! Pela Miten

Is darkwave & aggrotech part of goth culture?

I'm new to the goth scene, and I'm more into darkwave (and a little aggrotech) than some other gothic genres. Am I still goth?

When do you “dress the part”?

When it comes to the dramatic makeup and clothing, how often do you put these on?

Is it more of a outfit for the club, or is it something you should try to wear almost 24/7?

I know some people try a more casual, less extreme appearance and wear throughout the week, or go full out during the weekend only, but is dress in our daily lives very important to the ethos or subculture of being goth?

can I suggest something to add in the goth worldwide part of this subreddit?

I saw that on top of this subreddit there was a part dedicated to goth worldwide, but there was nothing for Italy, so I would like to suggest some bands to add there (mods could look at those bands and then decide if they should be added). Christine Plays Viola; Sorry; Heels; The Spiritual Bat; Japan Suicide; Go Flamingo!; Avant-garde; Dystopian Society; Secret Sight; Beyond Soul; Estetica Noir; Tetrolugosi; Sindrome Del Dolore; A Silent Noise; Nero Moderno; Branches. I don't know if they are a perfect fit but I tried

What part of The Cure’s discography is goth?

I know the answer is probably "Faith," and "Pornography," but to me that doesn't seem enough to be classified as goth. I know goths love Disintegration, but what about it is goth? Ive heard it said that The Cure and Siouxsise and The Banshees started goth, but didn't goth originate from post-punk, like Joy Division?

I’ve noticed many younger people in the goth subculture gravitating towards Aaliyah, especially in the African American goth community, even though she was not goth herself. Made me think, what other figures have been co opted by goths that weren’t themselves part of the subculture?
