What’s your top three 90’s goth bands?

The 90’s is where Goth and fashion died in malls and started to stray from its roots resulting popularity from non goth icons like MM.

Since this was pre-internet. Bands struggled to get recognition unless they were signed to bigger labels like Cleopatra Records.

None the less it is one of the most vital decades full of really awesome bands that sometimes go overlooked. (Not necessarily the bands I’m about to pick, but you get what I mean)

My question is what are your top 3 Goth bands from the 90’s?

For me it’s: 1. Corpus Delicti 2. London After Midnight 3. Rosetta Stone

Those bands for me have a catalogue of great songs!

Graveyard Whispers – Feel The Wrath (‘90s Goth Parody band from San Diego)

Just got a copy of this tape from the singer of Cattle Decapitation who joined this band toward the end and mostly added sampler stuff. It was a side band of a kinda proggy San Diego band called Upsilon Acrux. Trying to figure out how to upload the music. Anybody else got this?

Why did goths have such a significant pop culture/media presence in the 90’s and then just stop?

Bear with me as I'm a babybat. Around the late 1980's and early 1990's, movies such as the Lost Boys, the Craft, the Crow, Interview with a Vampire, etc. were sensationalizing the goth scene, and I think this really gave them a brief period of significant presence within popular culture. I think the Goths of the 90's were a really pivotal point for the scene's history.

Then around the early 2000's we started seeing this "goth" or "gothic" stock characters appearing in media, which more or less still exists in the 2020's, with each incarnation of this stock having lesser and lesser resemblance to its roots.

I cannot really remember a movie in recent time that's meant to resonate with our scene. There was that one movie (name I forgot) where a man becomes a popular Goth singer, and then moves to Europe because his father might have been a nazi or something, but I think that film was trying to more or less mock the subculture because the protagonist "sheds" their Goth-ness by the end.

Was methamphetamine prevalent in the ’90s goth scene? “Crystal Myth” article depicting such.

Hi! I was reading this article pretty evocatively describing the DC goth scene in the '90s getting decimated by methamphetamine. I was curious if anyone here was around at that time, or has similar memories — I'm just very curious as to what the seedier side of the community was like back when the community was big.

Revival : 90’s vs 00‘s

I love a good comparison thread, for me the heyday of goth rock (traditional goth rock) was obviously 80s and 90s. The early 00s also had it’s fair share of excellent goth bands, and to be honest – I enjoyed it much better than the stuff that’s getting produced nowadays (which is somewhat watered down to my taste, personally).

So, what are some of your fav bands from the revival years 90s and 00s?

Nosferatu first broke my attention in 1991 with the “Hellhound” single, following it up with “Vampire’s Cry”.

I know some people find Nosferatu to be a bit of a cliche band but I kinda liked their early work.

What followed were bands like The Wake (1993), Into the Abyss (1993), Black Atmosphere (1995), The Shroud (1996 debut album), Ex-Voto (1995), Faith and the Muse (1994), Ikon (1994 full length debut), Children on Stun (1994), Brotherhood of Pagans (1995), The Prophetess (1993), Screams for Tina (1993), Wreckage (1994 – “Crawling From the Wreckage”), etc.

So , clearly my love is around the early-mid 90s.

Newer bands (still releasing new music now), I’d have a hard time finding ones who I click with really, and sadly most of those older ones aren’t releasing material nowadays.
