I’m starting to get into fields of the nephilim and the songs celebrate, for her light, and there will your heart be also are such good songs

I especially love and your heart will be also, it’s like if Pink Floyd had a goth phase and it’s so good

Why did goths have such a significant pop culture/media presence in the 90’s and then just stop?

Bear with me as I'm a babybat. Around the late 1980's and early 1990's, movies such as the Lost Boys, the Craft, the Crow, Interview with a Vampire, etc. were sensationalizing the goth scene, and I think this really gave them a brief period of significant presence within popular culture. I think the Goths of the 90's were a really pivotal point for the scene's history.

Then around the early 2000's we started seeing this "goth" or "gothic" stock characters appearing in media, which more or less still exists in the 2020's, with each incarnation of this stock having lesser and lesser resemblance to its roots.

I cannot really remember a movie in recent time that's meant to resonate with our scene. There was that one movie (name I forgot) where a man becomes a popular Goth singer, and then moves to Europe because his father might have been a nazi or something, but I think that film was trying to more or less mock the subculture because the protagonist "sheds" their Goth-ness by the end.

why does coldwave seem to be such an obscure subgenre compared to the other goth rock subgenres?

it's almost always listed by people when listing goth rock subgenres, but i can't think of many classic bands in the genre, other than little nemo, coldreams, and lost desert (and maybe modern eon? idk). i can think of more modern coldwave bands than old school ones despite the subgenre seemingly being a cornerstone of goth rock. it's definiitely less obscure than say grey rock or grave wave, but still

feel free to leave coldwave recs for me, i feel like i need more to listen to

How does one deal with “cUt My LiFe iN tO PeIcEs” and other such heckling?

I'm a baby bat. Yesterday I went to see the movie Spiderverse 2 (amazing) and like four separate groups of children started at me with "cut my life in to peices" and one even asked me for a "wrist check". I know they're just kids, and people are going to be dicks no matter what I do but how should one respond to this?

There’s no such thing as goth types except music based maybe (Deathrocker, Batcaver, etc.). It’s only good maybe for people to find clothes in online thrift stores. I can’t really think of many or even one icon that fits into these boxes.

How do you deal with comments such as “It’s just a phase”?

Maybe I'm overreacting, but this gets me really mad. If I think someone is going through a phase whatever it may be, I will not say a word because it's just rude.

I'm a 23 old woman and last saturday was at my older sister's birthday party (she is 35 and everyone there except me and my bf was about the same age) and she and some friends told me "When I/your sister/someone I know… was your age, we too dressed as you, but now we are open to new horizonts and like every musical genre too!!'', I mean, cool I guess?

People don't seem to understand I do not only listen to goth music, I like a lot of other genres too, I simply wear black because it's a colour that makes me feel comfortable. They speak as they were enlightened beings because they are not alt anymore, and this pisses me off.

Was methamphetamine prevalent in the ’90s goth scene? “Crystal Myth” article depicting such.

Hi! I was reading this article pretty evocatively describing the DC goth scene in the '90s getting decimated by methamphetamine. I was curious if anyone here was around at that time, or has similar memories — I'm just very curious as to what the seedier side of the community was like back when the community was big.

A video that I love showing to people whenever they ask, “what is goth music?” She gives such a great sampler of the multiple types of sounds that define our community
