Teen Gothic

Hi All,

I just finished Andrew Reed's Assimilate, and loved it, found it well-researched, enjoyable to read, etc. He only briefly touched on the Gothic and Darkwave both from a literary analysis and the cross-pollination of Goth and Industrial subcultures, but he whetted my taste (particularly because he mentioned "pseudo-medieval music" without talking about Dead Can Dance) for a more critical examination of the Gothic, both in its roots in the literary genre, the analysis of the music and its production, and an analysis of the subculture. I was curious if anyone had written a work of similar breadth as Reed's on the topic? Thus far I've found a number of historical texts (Art of Darkness, Goth: A History, Season of the Witch), but I'm not sure, beyond their own description, which is more extensive or would suit my designs better.

Recommendations of scholarly and non-scholarly articles, journals, and even fanzines alike are also welcome. I've found a few on Jstor right now, but I'm sure some of y'all know some good articles.

I have been listening to some Gothic music for some times now and I also have been listening to Industrial music for some time too and I found them both fascinating. But I have recently imagined in my head combining these two genres and what it would sound like. Could you give any recommendations?

Edit: also why is combichrist on the list of problematic bands?

Combichrist is coming to my city to play at a local venue and I’m debating on going. For background, I’ve scratched the surface of Industrial but that’s it. With how large this sub-reddit is and the overlap between goth and industrial, I thought you all could give valuable information regarding the vibes of the show (music and attendees). I guess I’m just wondering if it will be a good show for goths that don’t listen to industrial or aggrotech much?

So, I enjoy industrial, ebm and goth music. I enjoy industrial and ebm way more and I don’t identify myself with goth subculture but I know plenty about it due to my interest in the music as well. Being surrounded by each crowd, I notice that a lot of goth people always label industrial and sometimes ebm bands (but I mostly just see people label industrial) that don’t fall under any goth genres as goth. I know that industrial and goth music were/still are two peas in a pod in clubs and stuff so I feel that has something to do with it buut. I’m just curious and want to know from a goth who considers industrial and/or ebm a part of goth, why?

Just genuinely curious and wanna know if I’m missing something!
