Origin of Gen Z’s Makeup and Clothing Styles?
I used to study subcultural styles and I wanted to ask about the looks I see with younger goths at the club and online.
The main thing I've noticed over the last couple years is a makeup style that consists of a white base with intricate black details added over it. Does anyone know the source of this look? A lot of goth style comes from emulating musicians, but I can't think of any that do this look (maybe Twin Tribes sometimes?). It like how it takes a trad goth look and iterates on it.
Also, in terms of dress how would you characterize Gen Z? I probably haven't paid as much attention to this as I should, in general they seems to go for traditional goth looks but maybe there are patterns I'm not seeing yet.

Went to my local store with goth makeup.
Over all I was too lazy to remove it.
No one really cared no one looked at me funny.
The major critic of what I did was my family, "What would the people say" literally.
A 23 year old getting lectured by his mother and brother for not looking normal because of the people.
Did I look weird? Absolutely.
Do I care? not really.
Was it fun? No one really said anything.
Over all my biggest haters is my family telling me how the police will beat me up and lock me up.
Or how I will get myself killed looking like that, because our drug addict relative had problems with the police.
I neither drink smoke or do drugs.
Over all a fun experiment I understand how if you are a kid people can hurt you verbally.
As a teen I dressed way worse and did way dumber things but I guess that looking like a hobo is socially acceptable, rather then dressing ok with goth makeup.
Interesting experiment. Said a lot about the people close to me.

How do I tell my mom that goth makeup isn’t “whiteface”
So my mom(39) is fine with me being a bit alternative…..to an extent. She’s fine with me liking weird shit and my “weird black music” lol but we but headings on the way I style myself. She only wants me to do stereotypical like not grunge “grunge” (think 2020 baggy jeans and nirvana t-shirt) and I wanna dress the way I like which is definitely not that. I’ve been getting into trad goth makeup and I really like the way I look. For the longest time I’ve always felt I’ve looked too much younger than I am, but when im in goth make up I really like the way I look a lot. My mom considers it whiteface. Whenever she sees me in it she’ll immediately tell me to scrub it off. At one point I made it my instagram profile picture and she yelled at me to take it down immediately. She compared it to a white person posting a picture of them in a charcoal mask.….that’s fine ig but digress. She says I’ll get my scholarship to college taken away if people see me like that. (She then got mad when I changed it to a bat cause then people would think I’m weird and suck blood????) Is there literally any way to deal with this. It’s like taking to a brick wall. Should I just suck it up cause I move away in 2 weeks? She’s still probably call me screaming if I do post pictures in it while I’m in college. She’s controlling like that.
