i hate how the meme has spiralled out of control and turned into something awful. men express their need for an alternative girlfriend and depict these girls as any girl with dark hair who has darker makeup, they don’t consider anyone who dresses traditionally goth or different to these online egirls. the women who panda to this standard also make me sick but that’s a different matter (i am also a woman so am not trying to drag others down, just making a point). i hate how these men also assume that all alternative girls are into very hardcore things in bed, this isn’t always the case and im not sure where this link/association came from. this is leading to men not feeling as though they need to ask alternative women and fems for consent (something that happened to me many moons ago and was deemed okay because i’m goth and “that’s what i wanted” when i clearly didnt) this meme has gotten so out of control, so much so that i feel as though i cannot leave the house without getting remarks related to this meme thrown at me, i just find it completely derogatory and wondered what you wonderful people think about all of this?

Teach me please. There's a Spotify playlist they made called "Dark & Gothic" – it's basically a list of my favorite songs in the genre from when I was in my teens-20s (to be sure, they are definitely the "hits" of the genre).

What are some newer bands that echo these classic ones? I'm a big Cure type person but am open to any new stuff. Disintegration is an amazing novel of an album start to finish is where I'm sort of coming from.

I'm trying to broaden my scope with 80s goth rock a bit. But I've checked out about 20 other bands now, but I can't find something that clicks. I'm often turned off by bands that have too much of a punk sound. Or bands that have vocals I dislike, like too monotone (Sisters of Mercy, band always kind of felt like a goth pastiche?) or too punk (shouting with thick british accent). I care a lot about vocals in my music, if I don't like the singer I won't like the band.
The bands i like most are definitely the proto classics: Cure, Bauhaus, Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees. And also: Asylum Party, Xmal Deutschland, Killing Joke, Echo and the Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins.

What should I be looking for? Any recommendations? Sorry for my rigidness.

Hi everyone, long time goth fashion wearer but still a baby bat in terms of actual goth culture. I posted kind of a backstory under this thread which led me to wanting to ask this question.

The tl;dr version of it is that I only started listening to goth music about a couple months ago but because my tastes are both varied and oddly specific at the same time it’s been hard for me to find the type of goth music I enjoy listening to. I’m the kind of person who likes a handful of songs from different artists but said artists aren’t necessarily my favorite.

So far I really enjoy ACTORS’ sound. I’d like to find more artists similar sounding to them. But I’m an alt-pop singer myself so I tend to enjoy female vocals, especially ones that are very powerhouse-y and vocal acrobatics-y. Additionally I’m a freak for love songs. I love romantic melodies and lyrics. I haven’t found anything like those either, so if anyone has any recommendations for those as well I’d really appreciate it! Artists of any decade are welcome!

I feel like I’ve gone way too long having a complete misconception about what goth really is and it’s time for me to school myself and stop being a poser. I’m here to learn 🙂
