What’s your favorite goth song of all time? I’ll go first.

(Yes I’m very simple, lol).

Best 3-album-run in goth rock?

Albums only: no EPs, no singles.

We have a few strong contenders but my pick is Fields Of The Nephilim's first 3: Dawnrazor, The Nephilim, Elizium.

I miss goth

Yes, one can argue that Goth is still around, but where I live, we haven't had anything goth in almost a decade now. Whatever goths we've had, have either "grown up" or moved abroad, if they even were goth and not just metalheads going through a goth phase, to begin with.

Because there's no scene, no foreign bands want to come here either, not even from neighbouring countries (She Past Away is a good example, they tour the Americas even though it'd be cheaper for them to come here), and no local bands want to play anything goth for the same reason. The few goths that are still around don't even talk to each other anymore for different reasons (for example, I had an acquaintance who randomly started talking shit about me, so naturally we stopped communicating).

I mean, maybe I'm too old for goth and should just move on, but it's been part of me for so long, I don't want to let it go, ya know?

It's depressing, really. 🙁

Is the UK Goth scene smaller then it was 15-20 years ago?

Do you think the UK Goth scene is a lot smaller then it was in the 2000's and how do you think its changed?

do people actually think that goth music is just screaming?

i’ve seen quite a few people online talking about people thinking goth music is just screaming and i don’t understand why anyone would think that. if people DO really think that, what gave them that idea?

Does goth music do this for you too or am I just weird?

I have this weird thing about my brain where listening to darkwave, coldwave, and etherealwave helps my brain focus. Its the most effective thing at regulating me emotionally, calming/relaxing me, helping me concentrate/focus, and soothing my bodys adrenaline response(ptsd symptoms). It clears up brain fog pretty effectively, too. Helps me process information as well/helps my memory.

I've never ever heard of gothic genres as helping someone that much(mentally, emotionally) just by their sound alone(compared to classical). It doesn't matter what the lyrics are, just the sound alone massively helps me emotionally and mentally. When I'm upset, hurting, anxious, scared, in fight or flight, nervous system dysregulated, just listening to the genre for about 20 min fixes everything. You'd think that listening to "depressing/melancholy" music would make things worse , but it does quite the opposite! I'd go so far as to say it's comforting.

All the things people say about how good classical music is for your brain is exactly all the things darkwave/coldwave/etherealwave does for me for some reason. Meanwhile classical doesn't do much to help me.

Is it because my brain really fucks with the music in particular or do you think there's a specific reason why it'd help so much?

Additionally, does anyone else have this too with a goth genre? Or is my brain just a special breed

i hate being a goth woman

i hate going outside dressed the way i like. i usually don’t care what people think of the way i dress, i get plenty of looks and that’s what to be expected. everywhere i go, i either get people staring in awe or in complete disgust.

i hate being a goth because of pervs who fetishise goth women. the amount of times ive had old men come up to me on the streets blowing kisses, the amount of men who catcall me even when my boyfriend is with me, or some random drug addicts trying to follow me home. im only 18. i hate it. i hate feeling so unsafe whenever i leave my apartment.

the looks i get is starting to get to me, it makes me feel insecure. my boyfriend took me out on a nice date outdoors and there were girls around my age giving me the most disgusting looks ive ever seen in my life, looking back and giggling, pointing at me. why is my fashion sense an excuse for people to treat me like i don’t have feelings or as though im some prostitute?? this is just a vent, i’m just so tired and feel like crying every time i get approached on the street or followed home.

Do people know you label yourself as “goth” ?

It kinda weird for me all these labels i never understand what is the actual point of the labels. it feels realy weird saying "i'm goth" beacuse what i mean by goth does not what other people think goth is. i am recently find intrest in gothic sub culture but i could never imagine myself telling my mother hey mom im goth or something. it might be just me but it feels like a gender label. i mean it's only the kind of music you listen too so why there is a label to this ? i understand that this is a sub culture but it's just weird. no effence beacuse i feel pretty connected to the culture already but i keep it to myself.

It's funny beacuse my family know i find intrest in metal music as well so i don't know why it feels so diffrent if they will know i find intrest in the goth sub culture beacuse gothic music is nothing angry or heavy as metal. also my mother ask me if i'm freak because I asked for another shirt like the one I have with a skull i just like the fucking image what's worng with that

How did goth develop from very guitar driven sounds to a modern shape with a heavy emphasis on synth, while still being considered goth?

There's a gulf between Sisters of Mercy and something like Twin Tribes or Forever Grey, but we all intuit them as 'goth' and i'm just wondering how this developed, historically.

EDIT: Misspoke here, did not mean to imply that synth or darkwave is a modern thing, but more that it's far more prevalent now as a dominant goth sound and was curios as to how we still consider this music to be goth (not that i disagree with that at all).

do you have to listen to the “basic” goth bands everyone listens to to be goth?

I apologize if this is a stupid question! I don’t intend to diss on any bands like The Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie, etc. I am actually quite interested in those bands but I get a little bit intimidated by more well known stuff because I am afraid of seeming like a poser and not knowing where to start… I’ve really been into bands like Tristania, Within Temptation, Mortal Love, The Sins of Thy Beloved etc just because I really love the sound especially really symphonic stuff and im more interested in trying a bolder goth style as I’ve kind of been in the alternative scene for years now but have been too scared to place myself in any particular subculture. I know goth subculture is music based but I wasn’t aware if you had to listen to specific bands or if the bands I like count or anything…I also think I might be stressing too much because I know a big part of it is just not conforming to the norm? I dunno. Help is appreciated!
