Teen Gothic

I don’t mean like by regular people who think our music and clothes are weird. I mean by other people in the goth music subculture. I’ve heard some older millennials and gen x say when they were young, even though ppl would listen to goth music, attend events/clubs that supported local goth bands, dress the part, etc. you could never call yourself goth bc that was cringe and in some cases ironically made you less goth. Where did this come from? Is it because they didn’t want to be associated with posers/mallgoths that wanted the label so badly? Did it have something to do with anti-conformity?

Show me what you know of that exists in that category, please! Like really southern sounding goth music that has some twang to it, I need that shit in my life post-haste!

E.g. Someone dressed/looking like trad goth but doesn’t identify as goth.

I know someone has to remember this gem.

I'm not sure how widespread it was, but if you had it, still have it, tell us how you found it.

I'll start: Roderick's Chambers – San Francisco (1998 – before S.F. went to shit.) Fetish Ball – bought it from a vendor there – me fully decked out in a custom leather male corset – with custom shackles, manacles, and a gorgeous posture collar. Long hair, pale skin, waif thin, and looking Elvish. I was modeling them for a good friend and Spiritual Advisor.

Didn't know the songs by name yet except Skin and Lye by Malign – bought it anyway.

Got a lot of play… lost it to shifts in location, time, and/or technology changes – but I had it for years.

I get “Tim burton” a lot. One guy at the dispo said I looked like I walked out of a Sex Pistols concert. Me and my girlfriend also got called “Dracula” on our way to get soda one time 😆
