Late ’90s-2000s darkwave: a lost era in Goth scene history?

I got into the Goth scene in the mid-2000s, and my first exposure came in the form of artists on the Dancing Ferret label – The Cruxshadows, Ego Likeness, ThouShaltNot, and The Last Dance were the sacred standbys of my peer group who were first discovering the Dark Arts, so to speak. The Where's Neil When You Need Him? tribute album is perhaps the most representative sample of the scene and era.

I notice however that this period and this section of the Goth music kingdom is ignored by Goth historians: Lol Tolhurst ignores it in his recent Goth: A History, jumping between '90s Depeche Mode and 2010s-2020s post-punk revival.

Goth Music: From Sound to Subculture by Elferen and Weinstock mostly focuses on Industrial and Death Rock, and largely acts under the assumption that this era and corner of the Goth scene never existed.

Would it be inaccurate to say that these artists, neglected by historians of Goth music/subculture, constitute the Goth scene's lost years?

How Faith and the Muse/Dead Can Dance are considered darkwave?

As far as I’ve seen, bands like Faith and the Muse and Dead Can Dance are also considered among darkwave genre although they are mentioned much more in ethereal wave genre. But why these bands are also considered darkwave? What are some example songs? And do you think this darkwave lebel is true?

What are some of your favorite early/first wave darkwave bands, which are not ethereal.

Curious to know which darkwave bands people are into that are from the first wave of the darkwave sub-genre, which are not under the ethereal sub-genre.

What’s the difference between darkwave and goth rock?

Hi there, extremely new to goth music and was wondering about the difference between darkwave and goth rock. I was googling around to try and find the right term(s) for the genre(s) I most enjoy, and found that there was a lot of overlap between listed bands and artists. Some that were mentioned under both include Christian Death, Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, and Dead Can Dance. This is made even more complicated for me as Apple Music labels pretty much everything as alternative, rock, or goth rock almost interchangeably. I would just like to know if there is any meaningful difference between these terms? Thanks <3

Edit: I should also mention that Google's definitions seem a little strange, as I see bands such as Evanescence and Nine Inch Nails listed under goth rock even though I'm pretty sure they're not goth at all
