“The Goth Subculture and why it’s has NOTHING to do with politics” -This babybat is confused.

Ok, I'm a complete babybat and I'm still learning about all this. The quote from the title is NOT something that I said but it was something an "elder experienced goth" told me and I'm not sure whether that person is being truthful or not.

This elder Goth talks about how Goth "HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH PUNK" because "goth was the opposite reaction to the ultra political movement of punk and it's only based in art and every sociopolitical expression should be discarded immediately from the subculture" According to this person "Goth is Apolitical"

This elder Goth also separates the Punk from the Post Punk movement and says that "Post Punk was created out of this "'Punk is dead' realization and it's meant to NOT be political at all because it seeks the opposite of what Punk was = zero involvement in politics" This person also discards ABSOLUTELY any kind of DIY because "DIY derives from Punk and the Goth Subculture was created from Post Punk NOT from the Punk movement, so it's NOT related at all"

That's sounds really interesting ngl, most of us have the idea that Goth was a direct product of punk but this "elder wise goth" makes a distinction between Punk and Post Punk and explains that Goth was born out of Post Punk as a backlash from Punk politics.

What y'all think about this, do you really think that Goth is COMPLETELY APOLITICAL AND ANY SOCIOPOLITICAL POSITION SHOULD BE AUTOMATICALLY DISCARDED BECAUSE GOTH IS APOLITICAL (?????????????????)

I'm going to be honest, I'm not 100% sure about what this person told me because this "elder wise goth" is a transphobic and has stalked and has harassed others Goths online with the excuse of "correcting them" about the origins of the subculture.

it’s supposed to be for fun. not that serious.

Every other post is someone having an identity crisis or complaining about their families/communities not appreciating their gothness. I just want to make sure everyone knows it’s supposed to make you feel good to listen to music you enjoy and wear the style of clothes you like. It isn’t that deep.

When you put it into perspective, it’s kind of a shallow thing to complain about. There are people in the world being persecuted for things completely outside their control. You have the privilege of going out looking like a freak, knowing full well it will provoke a reaction from people, and then you get to take it off at the end of the day.

If you’re that sensitive, don’t even bother. I personally only get gothed up to go to my local goth night once in a blue moon. I don’t want to be stared at everyday for dressing like a weirdo. I’m an adult with bigger things to worry about.

My family doesn’t supports or understand my goth interests and it’s making me feel very lonely

I've been interested in the goth subculture for a while, a few days ago, I decided to listen to the music and, omg, I've feel in love with it, I've easliy spend several hours just listening to goth music, it's one of my favorite genres now and I'm even planning on watching some goth movies. I'm also planning on dressing in goth style, but here's the problem, I'm mostly an indoors person, so I've very few friends and the only people I talk with frequency is my family. I decided to reveal my interests and my plan for my goth outfit today, expecting support and unfortunaley, as you've guessed, all I was meet with is mockery, harsh judgement and them claiming them won't help me with anything, they even said that I'll look "horrifiying" or a "freak" or even saying stuff like "imagine you going out like this in public, looking like a vampire, if you want it, fine, but let's agree that's weird and I don't want any part of that", this has made me very sad and also very lonely, it's makes me think that I'll never meet someone that respects or have the same interests as me and that people are only going to see me as a "weirdo" (not helping that I've only meet like, 2 alt ppl besides me in my entire life), I can't put in words how this has broken my heart. I'm planning on revealing my goth interests to my very few friends, I hope they understand me and don't judge or mock me. Sorry in case my english is broken (I'm brazilian) and sorry for the long post, I just wanted to vent

It’s frustrating sometimes being an Indian goth

I'm Indian. Have been in love with the subculture for years, been religiously listening to the music for as long as I can remember. But, in my vicinity, I absolutely don't know anyone with the same music taste T__T I listen to tons of other genres so I have friends with whom I can make conversations about music but, almost no goths, at least not that I know of. It sometimes gets very lonely since there's no presence of any community here. Irony is that the metropolitan cities in India have underground scenes for metal, hip-hop and other genres but, it's difficult to find people who actually listen to goth. Kolkata, the city I'm from, is internationally known for some of the most brutal underground death metal/black metal projects and those scenes here are thriving. But, absolutely nothing for goth. I see people posting about going to goth clubs and all that, and I wish I could experience that once. Some day, maybe!

Plus, dressing up gothic here is such a chore. I want to explore the fashion aspects of the subculture but, the constant fetishization has led me to stop dressing up like that completely. All I get is thirsty remarks from creepy men or get stared at publicly. The humid weather here isn't really conducive either. Are there any fellow Indian goths here?

The murder of Eurydice Dixon – in many ways it’s Australia’s case similar to Sophie Lancaster (TW: SA, murder)

I just watched this new video from Disturban covering Eurydice Dixon's assault and murder.

TRIGGER WARNING : descriptions of murder and sexual assault

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-eGloQ0X6U

I'll summarise so people who don't want to watch it can get the gist of what happened. In 2018 Eurydice Dixon (an up and coming Australian stand-up comedian) was on her way home after meeting with her boyfriend that night in Melbourne, Australia and she was stalked, sexually assaulted and killed by a man because he liked how she looked "goth". I will not name him because fuck this arsehole, he doesn't deserve the infamy.

His reason for stalking and assaulting her that night was he liked the look of her "because she looked goth". He also liked "emo" porn on the internet and over time shifted into more sexually violent content then later snuff films. He was also viewing this sort of material online after the crime to re-live it. He told his dad that next time he'll do it "better".

The chief of police spoke about ways women can keep themselves safe and many women took offence at this as it felt like victim blaming. And of course this annoyed the MRAs and anti-feminists. Before the planned vigil for Eurydice on the spot she died, an MRA activist vandalised it because he didn't like the feminist connotations. That's besides the main point about why I am posting this here but it is worth mentioning as it shows the contempt many men have towards women in general.

This is a case with a direct link to goths, emos and alt people being sexualised online leading to a real life crime. We don't know if he was just an awful man fetishising who took things way too far or saw her looking "goth" as a sign of weakness thus a soft target. I feel like he was emulating the porn he was watching either way. It was all for self gratification and power on his part and Eurydice looking goth/emo was a big part of that.

A lot of the porn out there with goth/emo people is very sexually violent or at least BDSM oriented. This shows it can lead to violent consequences in the real world though it has to be said most people wouldn't do something like this. But it can happen and they will cite that sort of porn as an influence.

I hope this bastard is never let out of prison as the judge thinks he has no remorse and will highly likely do it again. That said, he apparently isn't having an easy time of it in prison as other inmates have attacked him due to the nature of his crime.
