Teen Gothic

I know, I know the point has been made before, so if the mods want they'll probably just cast the post into the darkness, but I have a slightly more elaborate point to make than just "poseurs bad".

I was thinking earlier. I actually only goth into goth in my like, mid 20s, by wondering randomly "what's goth actually about, anyway?" And looking it up, finding some music that struck me like a shot to the heart and getting hooked.

Only, then I remembered, that wasn't the first time I'd thought that and looked into it. The first time was when I was a teenager. But when I looked it up at the time, what I came across was instead forums and stuff by those "goth is a feeling" types who think they're goth because they like spooky shit and dressing in black. So back then, I thought "if it's just a feeling, what's the point? You'd be one by accident. That's just putting a label on nothing." And so, I bounced off it assuming it was basically just some people wanting a special label to feel important and different.

I got a bit annoyed remembering that. If there'd been better information back then – or if I was more thorough, perhaps, and they weren't hogging the most obvious goth site names for their poser shit – I might've got into goth way sooner and got to have good experiences with it and come across the music I like so much sooner. And that's why they suck.

Hi everyone! I’m a newer goth (only a couple years have I been TRULY listening to goth music and partaking in the sub culture) and I have developed a very specific taste that I can’t quite figure out how to pinpoint. I really love goth music that has quieter, muffled vocals and is more focused on the instrumentals. Obviously I HAVE found music that fits that taste profile, but I struggle to find more/new music that fits it for my playlists. Song or band recommendations are highly welcome! On that same note, how does one tell if a band is actually goth or not? May be a dumb question, but I find it hard to discern between goth and non goth when such similar themes are used and I don’t want to be offensive to any old head goths that have curated the sub culture we enjoy today. Thanks, any answers or recs are much appreciated <3

I think there should be a rule blocking those type of posts here, and there should be a subreddit called something like r/newtogoth. That subreddit could be for people who are new to goth (baby bats) only, and could be for asking questions and learning.

i few days ago i decided to finally dress up "gothic" and even put a bit of makeup on (which i pretty much never do) but i ended up getting laughed at by multiple people, harassed from a car twice and overall made fun of by strangers. i live in a city where so to say "gothic" people are pretty hard to find overall, so people here are obviously not used to that type of subculture.

i was just wondering how do you guys deal with this type of situations?
