Who else loves the music but doesn’t care that much for the look?

This is probably not worth a discussion thread, but I find it interesting how the reverse is usually true for most people trying to get into goth (ie loving the look but not the music).

For me, it's very, very easy to like the many branches of goth music (death rock and ethereal wave being my favourite genres under the umbrella). As it's understood, you can't call yourself a goth if you don't like the music. But are you a goth if you ONLY like the music?

I'm not a spooky person, but I can't get enough of the reverberating guitars and dreary melodies. The style can look very beautiful, but I'd feel suffocated if I dressed in the same style everyday.

I'm not looking to categorize myself in anything, but I was curious to see who else was in the same boat.

The scene’s approval doesn’t matter.

Elder goth here, with an important public service announcement to all of you who are newer goths, or goth-curious.

Thirty something years ago I went to my first goth night. I had been listening to the basics for a couple years, not really aware that there was a scene. For the most part, I had just been an alt kid. I spent some time in the punk scene, and finally made some friends who were goth, and started hanging out with them more, and really finding that goth really clicked with me.

Anyway, some friends were going to an all ages goth night, and I wore my “Love will Tear us Apart” shirt, and some black jeans. We got there a bit early, and as people were filtering some girl who was wearing the same shirt looked and me and in a totally disgusted way rolled her eyes and said to friends something about how she couldn’t believe that some dickweed kid was wearing the same shirt.

That really sucked, but I didn’t let it phase me too much. I kept going and tried really hard to be the gawthiest person around. Fast forward two or three years and I am so well known in the scene (big scene in that city) that as an underage person I had no issues getting into 21+ clubs and drinking drinks at the bar to my heart’s delight.

I had a great time and had lots of friends. The reality though was that the people who ended up being real friends, would have just as cool to me the first time I ever walked into a club in my joy division shirt. The reason is that they are actually cool people. Many people are not. If someone is an ass to you because you are new, or asking questions that think you should know the answer to, pay no mind. Those people are truly not worth knowing. There are a ton of shitty people in the scene, and you DO NOT need their approval. Don’t worry about other people. Enjoy the music, and dance, even if you don’t know how. No one worth knowing will ever look down on you, because WE HAVE ALL BEEN NEW at one time or another.

Hope this helps at least one person. If it does it was worth it.

Does anyone else love everything Goth but doesn’t care to dress up?

I've considered a lot of aspects of my personality to be in the niche, macabre and creepy side of things. Goth and Post- Punk rule music playlists. I'm obsessed with horror. Does a goth have to dress goth to be goth? I don't think so. What do y'all think?

My family doesn’t supports or understand my goth interests and it’s making me feel very lonely

I've been interested in the goth subculture for a while, a few days ago, I decided to listen to the music and, omg, I've feel in love with it, I've easliy spend several hours just listening to goth music, it's one of my favorite genres now and I'm even planning on watching some goth movies. I'm also planning on dressing in goth style, but here's the problem, I'm mostly an indoors person, so I've very few friends and the only people I talk with frequency is my family. I decided to reveal my interests and my plan for my goth outfit today, expecting support and unfortunaley, as you've guessed, all I was meet with is mockery, harsh judgement and them claiming them won't help me with anything, they even said that I'll look "horrifiying" or a "freak" or even saying stuff like "imagine you going out like this in public, looking like a vampire, if you want it, fine, but let's agree that's weird and I don't want any part of that", this has made me very sad and also very lonely, it's makes me think that I'll never meet someone that respects or have the same interests as me and that people are only going to see me as a "weirdo" (not helping that I've only meet like, 2 alt ppl besides me in my entire life), I can't put in words how this has broken my heart. I'm planning on revealing my goth interests to my very few friends, I hope they understand me and don't judge or mock me. Sorry in case my english is broken (I'm brazilian) and sorry for the long post, I just wanted to vent

I love being a goth thats doesn’t dress up

Hey, y'all who are feeling insecure about loving music and not dressing up, cheer up my friend! Most people here love you and excepts you! I LOVE the music but I don't really feel like dresses stereotypical or anything. I love this because I can wear professional business type pink colored clothes and pull out shit like "Sex and Drugs and Jesus Christ" by Christian Death. I love being able to give people a bit of surprise! Am I strange for this? I don't really care.

my mother doesn’t like me because I wear goth clothes.

Everytime that I put a goth t-shirt or sweater my mom makes comments about how I'm weird/should stop wearing that "garbage". What should I do?

Would you consider someone who listens to goth music, but doesn’t dress the part, goth?

I've been thinking about this for a while, as "listening to the music" always seems to be the criteria when people ask if someone is goth. A lot of people who dress quite goth get called posers or something like it because they don't listen to any goth bands, but don't the clothes have at least some say in the matter?

My bf doesn’t really want me to go goth..

Okay so… I’ve been into alternative music for about 6 years (emo, metal, screamo), and always was interested in alternative fashion but shied away from it because of my parents/fear of not fitting in. Well I’m now moved out and beginning to develop my own style and have been trying to build up a more goth wardrobe as I love the style, music, and literature, and have fell in love with all those things in the last few months. Well, my boyfriend was super supportive and encouraged me to experiment with makeup, but now that I’ve began shopping for more gothic clothes, I can tell he doesn’t love it. He’s never liked trad goth makeup (I do). Today he kind of revealed that he’s not sure how much he actually likes goth style. I think he just thought I was going to be like a stereotype of a goth girl, like overly sexual and more of an E-girl type style (not that anything is wrong with that but it’s not my style). I don’t know how to feel. On one hand, I want him to find me attractive but at the same time, this style makes me feel confident and sexy and like I’m actually expressing myself. I really love him and he’s super supportive so I know he wouldn’t try to control how I dress but I really don’t want him to be less attracted to me now. Does anyone have any advice?

I had to do a double take. Just got my ticket when I realized I wasn’t imaging this. Skeletal Family, Nox Novacula in Seattle on November 21, 2023. Fun House. It doesn’t get any better than this.
