Teen Gothic

I (20m) am rather new to the goth community and I've seen many posts and comments on here which mention that some who dress dark / gothic are sometimes getting barked at.

Yesterday I've been on a date with a woman who has been goth far longer than me and as we both walked into a big train station, a few men / Boys barked at us or her.

I wanted to ask if you think that this was more likely directed at both of us or more at her because she's a woman? I can't really tell if this event was something like catcalling aimed towards her or just aggression against us both because of our style.

I am sorry if this question is a bit dumb but I've never experienced something like this in person and I don't want to make this about me if I potentially wasn't the victim at all.

Edit: I know there's going to be some drama because he's going to be here when it happens. I know he's going to try to stop me. He's going to see me taking my stuff out of the bedroom. I'm a little worried he's going to physically attack me or try to restrain me. I'm considering calling the police to stand by but I don't want to put my friend through that. I'm just going to be firm and reiterate that it's over and I'm leaving.

I came across this tiktok of a girl talking about how she used to go to a goth night in Fresno 10 years ago and that she went again this year and there were so many young people.

I'm 21 and I've only been in the scene since COVID restrictions ended, so I can't compare. What I did notice is that most people are in their 40s and then there is a handful of young people, in their teens to early 20s that got into goth in the past few years, but it is still a very small group and I don't think it's enough to make any difference. One of the djs told my friends and I that they hadn't seen anyone under 30 at goth clubs for years until recently.

People who have been in the scene for longer, did you notice an increasing number of young people at events as well? Do you think goth has the potential to be a youth subculture again?

My coworker said their kid is way obsessed with Bowie so I gave her a copy of Bauhaus – Crackle.

I'm excited that younger folks are gonna watch that Wednesday Adams show and hear The Cramps.

Oh the drama was real. Especially in the southwest states and Latin America.

I remember the emo kids getting their asses kicked by the metalheads on the daily, especially at concerts, where there was an emo/screamo band and metal band playing.

I recently watched that episode of South Park where the goth kids are frustrated at being mistaken for emos..

Like we were arch enemies or something.

I think they got it wrong there. I always thought emos and goths kinda lived in the same social bubble.

The emos ensured a huge backlash though that I don’t ever remember going through in the goth scene.

In Latin America, emos were literally being murdered in the streets. And in most of the southern, southwest states in the US, emos were scene as pussies and… damn it was like what’s going on these days with the trans backlash almost. Not nearly as publicized though.

Hello, I am 15 years old and want to become a goth and want advice. This is because I've listened to some of the music and liked it, I like the aesthetic, and found myself agreeing with some of the ideologies. Also, the history behind it, of what I've seen, is pretty interesting. Any advice for me?

Hi. I'm 17 years old and for a few years I have been strongly admiring goth fashion. When it comes to goth music, I grew up listening to Marilyn Manson. But, strangely, the same people who took me to a Marilyn Manson concert when I was 13 really don't want me to have anything to do with goth or emo (in their minds goth and emo are close to the same) anything. Naturally, this has just made my fascination stronger. I'm a pretty good kid. Only thing I've done that seriously pissed my parents off was being trans. Maybe it's because in less than a year I'll be an adult, but I kinda feel like my teenage years would be a bit wasted if I didn't at least be a bit rebellious. So, exposition aside, give me some recommendations. Goth music, goth youtubers, some places to get goth fashion besides Hot Topic. And before anyone says anything, this isn't just an act of rebellion that I'm doing just to piss off my parents. It's something I've been thinking about for a few years but I'd be lying if I said that annoying my parents isn't a bonus.
