My Sister Is Trying to get into goth but…

Hi everyone, so I'm In a bit of a pickle with my relation to goth. My sister has been asking me for goth music recommendations and I've been pretty reluctant in helping her. For context we are both in our very early 30s and I have been into goth since I was 18 while my sister never cared for it, she'd even make fun of me for my personal goth appearance up until our early 20s when she finally stopped giving me backhanded comments.

Anyway she started asking me about the music last year and I kept shrugging it off. The main reason why I'm hesitant in giving her band recs is because I don't feel that she is truly interested and the reason why I think this is because ever since she started her own twitch gaming stream, she created this alt looking persona that is heavily a mix of e-girl/e-thot. In the profile from what I saw, she wears very overly sexualized clothing while trying to do darker makeup. And she posts these sexually suggestive pics on her Instagram while tagging herself as "goth" and "goththot"

I know that she's addicted to Tiktok and I feel like this is likely the reason why she started taking an interest to goth as a way to get more popularity/views since "goth" is trendy on that platform.

I've just been pretty reluctant because of the way she presents herself with this super overly sexualized aesthetic that has played a part in a certain annoying meme we're all aware of and I just feel like she's just trying to use the scene for shallow popularity and goth is something that is personally important to me and I'm tired of this gross sexualization that we goth women get and I just have a sneaking suspicion that my sister is gonna try to market herself as a "goth thot" and I don't want to help in perpetuating this stereotype Like I mentioned prior, she never once had interest in goth and would even remark on how ugly the style was (the trad style specifically) when we were younger though i know people's opinions can change but that's beside the point.

I guess I'm just wondering if I'm being unfair in not helping. I made a mental note to myself that if she can find some goth music on her own and sticks with it, I'd know if she's truly invested or if it's just for the trend and only then would I decide if I will help her or not because I'd rather not try to help someone who's interest is solely in just getting male attention which she admittedly has usually been like. I'm not saying that liking to be sexy is bad or anything but I feel like goth women deal with enough fetishization and I'd rather not encourage it. My sister isn't a bad person but goth is special to me and the music is what helped me get through my last year of high school and my college years and I hate seeing it being treated as a trend, it's the reason why I personally am not on TikTok because of that.

What got you guys into goth?

For me, it was having a friend as a kid whose older sister dressed alternative and we tried copying her. The friend grew out of it but it caused me to be fascinated with goth and I wanted to get into it. I also had a fascination with alternative characters on tv.

When did everyone first start getting into the music?

I realized that I had started listening to the whole goth scene for nearly 2 years now without actually knowing about it being goth. But for those that did. When did you start? And how did you know you were real into it. My bad for the dumb questions!

Now that I am, I want to now what are the best brands to buy clothes from? And what are some bands to listen to? (Currently listening to inkubus sukkubus, acid bath, and Bauhaus) Im also on the east coast of the us so I’d need help finding clothes that I’d be able to wear in the cold and not freeze my ass off

personally lebanon hanover, ghost dance, and the march violets haven't clicked for me the same way as other bands. not to say i necessarily dislike them, i have some of their stuff in my main goth playlist, but they aren't really bands i put on deliberately

Music Recs for Someone Getting into Goth Music?

I’m very new to goth music, although I’ve listened a bit to some goth and goth-adjacent bands (including Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, and Joy Division). I’m trying to find new bands to listen to, but I always get a little nervous when looking into new bands of any sort, since a lot of musicians (especially more “edgy” artists) tend to lean into more blasphemous/anti-religious themes/motifs either for political reasons or as an outlet for religious trauma.

While I understand why this might appeal to some people, I’m a Christian with a history of really bad religious OCD, and I’m worried that listening to artists who lean too far into those sort of themes/motifs could cause me to have a relapse. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some “safe” bands for me to listen to, with that in mind. (I’m find with songs that criticize aspects of my religion, but not ones that are just outright mocking it or saying my religion is fake, since those could be legitimately dangerous to my mental health).

Maybe I don’t look like a stereotypical goth, but I’m into the 80s goth rock.

Goth music recs for someone that’s really into hardcorepunk?

I'm especially into things like powerviolence/grind/d beat, but generally anything across the extreme punk rock/hardcore/metal realm. I'm looking for goth music that's also maybe inspired or adjacent to that, or that you just think would be enjoyable for people that also enjoy that stuff. Also my friend showed me 45 Grave and I really enjoyed them.

By the way there's this band from Albany NY called Wet Specimens that fits this category, it's the only one I can think of myself lol, try them out, they're sick.

What goth stereotypes do you shamelessly dive right into?

Here are mine.

Most of my playlists are 80s post punk, metal, rock and basically any music that involves the guitar.

I love horror movies especially classic horror and the lost boys is my all time favorite movie.

I love coffin shaped things

I have tattoos and piercings

I read and write horror and love Anne rice novels

I love a good red wine

Peter Steele. Enough said.

I love unwanted animals like spiders, snakes and lizards

The list goes on and on
